Buying wholesale clothes in Onitsha can be a very bulky job and especially frustrating for a first-timer. If you will be going to Onitsha to purchase any items, my best suggestion is to go with someone who is already familiar with the area.
Taxi apps like Bolt and Uber are not so popular and you will be your own director. Even if they were, they will be very expensive because of the poor traffic and then, probably poorly patronized since the average Onitsha indigen is not obsessed with luxury.
How To Buy Clothes In Onitsha Main Market
Before you go, there are two different types of clothes among all;
Already made clothes
These ones are brand new clothes which can be foreign or local made. They can be in boutiques but since you’re not looking for clothes to wear, getting them in the main market will be the better option.
The OK clothes come in different grades and the first grade turns out to be the most expensive.
Since there is a river in Onitsha, you can be sure to get bales of Okirika clothes to resell at very affordable rates.
They are all foreign clothes and might have been used before being shipped to Africa.
Things To Take Note Of While Shopping In Onitsha
Some of the things I think you should take note of while going to Onitsha for the first time include:
The average Onitsha street guy thinks he is smarter than the whole world and might want to pickpocket your phone or possibly rob you.
The road can be a bit confusing especially as a newbie. In my first experience, the keke driver took me around the town to double the t-fare and eventually wanted to zoom off with my change.
He asked me to come down from the keke while he brings the change and I refused. I eventually found out he had taken me round town and my transport fare was actually doubled.
People offering to help you
One of the craziest experiences in Onitsha involve people who help others only to turn and begin to request money.
It can be something as simple as giving you a direction or helping you cross the road, even when you don’t ask.
I will advise you to seek directions from people who own shops or taxi drivers if you need help.
For real, you don’t have to dress smartly while entering Onitsha or you will be an immediate target.
Put on something casual and they will assume you are one of them, I won’t even be putting many words into this.
