Hyacinth Alia Biography and Educational Background

Hyacinth Alia was born on the 14th of May, 1966 in Mbangur, Mbadede, Vandeikya LGA of Benue State. He had his primary education at St. Francis Primary School, Agidi, Mbatiav, Gboko.

In 1983, he entered St. James Minor Seminary, Makurdi, marking the beginning of his religious journey. Subsequently, he was admitted to pursue his studies at St. Augustine\’s Major Seminary, Jos. He completed a Diploma in Religious Studies in 1987 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sacred Theology in 1990.

Continuing his academic pursuits, he pursued a Master\’s in Religious Education (Psychology and Counseling) at Fordham University, located in Bronx, New York City, USA, which he successfully obtained in 1999.

Alia also holds a master\’s degree and doctorate in biomedical ethics from Duquesne University in Pennsylvania, United States.

Career and Politics

On July 7, 1990, Hyacinth Alia was ordained as a Catholic Priest. The ordination ceremony took place under the guidance and authority of Bishop Athanasius Atule Usuh, the esteemed spiritual leader of the Makurdi Catholic Diocese. With this significant event, Hyacinth Alia embarked on a sacred journey, embracing his role as a devoted servant of the Catholic Church.

Through his ordination, Fr. Hyacinth Alia became a conduit of God\’s grace and an instrument of His love and compassion. He devoted himself wholeheartedly to his ministry, embracing the teachings of the Catholic Church and striving to live a life of faith, humility, and service.

In May 2022, Alia joined Benue State’s gubernatorial race, running on the APC platform. In a swift reaction, the church hierarchy in the state made it clear that the canon law of the Catholic Church forbids clerics from active participation in politics, thereby leading to his suspension from serving as a priest.

While reacting to his suspension, Alia described it as one of the sacrifices he would have to make in making his “good plans” for the state become a reality. He also emphasized his decision to rescue the state from poverty.

On March 20, Hyacinth Ali was declared the winner of the governorship election in Benue State. He polled 473,933 votes to defeat PDP\’s Titus Uba who came second with 223,913 votes.

While reacting to the question of never being married as a priest the governor, through his spokesperson, said he did not need a wife to govern Benue State. He also stated that he had worked as a Catholic priest for years without a wife and that his new position as governor would not be an exception.
