He emerged as the new NLC National President unopposed on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, succeeding Ayuba Wabba who served two terms from 2015 to 2023.

Prior to the position, Ajaero served in different capacities at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ); including  Secretary/Chairman, Vanguard Chapter, Member Central Working Committee and National Executive Council of the NUJ (1997-1999) and National Ex-Officio.

Joe Ajaero is a Nigerian journalist and media personality, born on 17 December 1964 in Emekuku, Owerri North, Imo State. He attended the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) where he obtained a bachelor\’s degree in education in 1990. He later pursued his passion for journalism and obtained a postgraduate diploma in Journalism from Times Journalism Institute in 1994.

After leaving the army, Ajaero transitioned into journalism, serving as a reporter, correspondent, and assistant news editor at Vanguard, one of Nigeria\’s leading newspapers, between 1992 and 2001.

In 2001, Ajaero made another career move, this time joining the National Union of Electricity Employee (NUEE) as the Head of Training and Information. During his four-year tenure at NUEE, Ajaero was instrumental in developing and implementing several successful training programs aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of union members.
