Dr Livy Uzoukwu (SAN) is a Nigerian lawyer, author and the head of Peter OBI and Datti Baba Ahmed\’s legal team for the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT).

Livy Uzoukwu Biography and Education Background

Livy Uzoukwu was born on the 30th of August, 1958 in Umuhu-Okabia, Orsu LGA of Imo State. He attended Awo-Idemili Secondary School in Orsu Local Government Area, Imo State, from 1972 to 1976.

He obtained his first degree in law from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in Ile-lfe from 1977 to 1981. He then proceeded to the Nigerian Law School in Victoria Island, Lagos, where he earned a Barrister-at-Law (BL) degree in 1982. He furthered his studies by obtaining a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from Imo State University (now Abia State University) Uturu from 1988 to 1990.

Uzoukwu also attended the United Nations University and International Leadership Academy in Amman, Jordan. Currently, he is an LLM external student at the University of London.

Career

Livy Uzoukwu began his legal career in 1983 as a Partner at Chief C.C. Egole and Company, where he worked until 1988. He then established his own law firm, Livy Uzoukwu and Company, where he serves as the Head of Chambers. He has also been a Law Columnist for Sunday Statesman from 1986 to 1994.

From 1994 to 1996, Uzoukwu served as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Imo State. He was also a member of the Imo State Security Council, the Body of Benchers, the Council on Legal Education, and the Imo State Boundary Committee. He is currently an ex-officio executive member of the Nigerian Bar Association, Owerri branch, and the National Committee on Human Rights.

Uzoukwu is a contributing editor of the Orlu Year Book and a co-founder and co-editor of the Customary Court of Appeal Law Report. He has been a member of the Imo State Magistrates and High Court\’s Rules Committee since 1993. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Nigerian Bar Association, the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, the International Society of Poets, the Penal Reform International, and the International Society for Criminal Reforms. He is also an honorary member of the Association of Fellows and Legal Scholars, Centre for International Legal Studies.

Awards and Honours

Dr Livy Uzoukwu has received numerous awards for his contributions to the legal profession and literature. In 1988, he won the First Prize in the Nigerian Institute of Management Young Managers Competition, Eastern Zone. He has also received several Editor\’s Choice Awards and International Poet Merit Awards from the International Society of Poets in Maryland, USA. He was awarded the prestigious title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

Uzoukwu was also recognized as the Best All Round Student in the West African School Certificate Result at Awo-Idemili Secondary School in 1979.

In 2007, Livy Uzoukwu was appointed as a member of the Imo State Council of Elders by the Executive Governor of Imo State, in recognition of his exceptional services to the State. Later, on December 22, 2008, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria bestowed upon him the National Honour of Officer of the Order of Niger (OON), citing \”outstanding virtues\” and \”appreciation of services\” rendered to the country.

Dr Livy Uzoukwu is the author of several publications, including \”Grundnorm of Nigeria\” published by GG Limited and GLP in Lagos in 1991. He co-authored \”Remedies for Foreign Sellers of Goods\” with Sweet and Maxwell, London, in 1993, and contributed to \”The Comparative Law Year Book of International Business\” published by Kluwer, London, in 1998. He has also written numerous articles in newspapers and learned journals.
