Raymond Dokpesi was a Nigerian businessman, philanthropist, politician, and the founder of one of Nigeria\’s most popular TV channels, Africa Independent Television.

He reportedly died on the 29th of May, 2023 at a hospital in Abuja. According to a family source, the media mogul suffered a stroke shortly after the recent Ramadan fast and had been managing his health since. He was eventually placed on occupational therapy to improve his daily activities by walking out at the gym. He was, however, electrocuted while using one of the gym equipment, leading to a stroke and his eventual death.

Raymond Dokpesi Biography and Educational Background

Chief Raymond Anthony Aleogho Dokpesi was born on the  25th of October, 1951 in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, Nigeria. He, however, hails from Agenebode, Edo State. He had his early education at Loyola College Ibadan, after which he enrolled at the Immaculate Conception College (ICC) for his secondary. During his days at ICC, he was a pioneer member of Ozolua Play House, a dance/drama group.

Dokpesi thereafter enrolled at the prestigious University of Benin (UniBen), Edo State. He also holds a Doctorate degree in Marine Engineering from the University of Gdansk in Poland.

Career

Chief Raymond Dokpesi started his career as the personal assistant to Alhaji Bamaga Tukur one of the general managers of the Nigerian Ports Authority. He also served as a civil servant in the Federal Ministry of Transport under Alhaji Umaru Dikko and General Garba Wushishi.

Dokpesi is regarded as the Ted Turner of Nigeria because of the impact he has in the Nigerian media. He not only pioneered the first private television network in Nigeria, Africa Independent Television (AIT), but also pioneered Nigerians\’ first privately owned radio station. In fact, it is being said that AIT set the standard for salary structure in the media industry which the Nigerian Television Authority imitated.

He also established the first indigenous shipping line in Nigeria.

Political Career

Asides from the media, Dr Raymond Dokpesi was also active in politics. He served as a political campaign manager for the Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, a former Governor of Gongola State.

He also assumed the same role in 1993, during Alhaji Adamu Ciroma\’s presidential campaign, and Alhaji Bamanga Tukur\’s presidential campaign, and likewise, during Peter Odili\’s presidential campaign.

In 2017, Dokpesi contested for the PDP National Chairmanship position but lost to Uche Secondus.

Personal Life and Death

Chief (Dr.) Raymond Dokpesi was happily married to Tosin Dokpesi and the union was blessed with children.

As a philanthropist, he had a great interest in the educational sector. He offered scholarships to prospective students into tertiary institutions and also built schools for the community.
