Young Professionals Programme (YPP) Economic Affairs Opportunities at the United Nations

Positions within the YPP in Economic Affairs are primarily located in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Regional Commissions, and occasionally, other Departments of the UN Secretariat. These roles are integral in linking global policies on economic, social, and environmental issues with national implementation.

These positions are grounded in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, featuring 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets, adopted by the UN General Assembly on September 25, 2015. Specializations within these roles include macroeconomics, development economics, international economics (trade, finance, and investment), public economics, environmental economics, gender economics, or specific economic sectors. Incumbents typically report to the Head of a Branch or Section, or to a Senior Economic Affairs Officer.

Assessment Process:

Qualifications:

  • A first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or a three-year equivalent) in a relevant field.
  • Must be 32 years old or younger by the end of this year (born on or after January 1, 1991).
  • Proficiency in English or French.
  • Citizenship of a participating Member State.

Application Requirements:

  • A scanned copy of a passport or another valid identification document.
  • University degree documents (e.g., diploma, transcript).
  • Candidates should apply to only one YPP examination area per year.

Successful candidates will be placed on a roster used to fill entry-level vacancies (P1/P2) as they become available globally within the UN Secretariat. Placement on the roster is valid for three years but does not guarantee employment.
